چکیده

Logical formalisms for reasoning about relations between spatial regions play a fundamental role in geographical information systems, spatial and constraint databases, and spatial reasoning in AI. In analogy with Halpern and Shoham’s modal logic of time intervals based on the Allen relations, we introduce a family of modal logics equipped with eight modal operators that are interpreted by the Egenhofer-Franzosa (or RCC8) relations between regions in topological spaces such as the real plane. We investigate the expressive power and computational complexity of logics obtained in this way. It turns out that our modal logics have the same expressive power as the two-variable fragment of first-order logic, but are exponentially less succinct. The complexity ranges from (undecidable and) recursively enumerable to Π11-hard, where the recursively enumerable logics are obtained by considering substructures of structures induced by topological spaces. As our undecidability results also capture logics based on the real line, they improve upon undecidability results for interval temporal logics by Halpern and Shoham. We also analyze modal logics based on the five RCC5 relations, with similar results regarding the expressive power, but weaker results regarding the complexity.

Modal logics for mereotopological relations

We present a complete axiomatization of a logic denoted by MTML (Mereo-Topological Modal Logic) based on the following set of mereotopological relations: part-of, overlap, underlap, contact, dual contact and interior part-of. We prove completeness theorems for MTML with respect to several classes of models including the standard topological models over the set of regular-closed subsets of arbit...

Topological Semantics and Bisimulations for Intuitionistic Modal Logics and Their Classical Companion Logics

We take the well-known intuitionistic modal logic of Fischer Servi with semantics in bi-relational Kripke frames, and give the natural extension to topological Kripke frames. Fischer Servi’s two interaction conditions relating the intuitionistic pre-order (or partial-order) with the modal accessibility relation generalise to the requirement that the relation and its inverse be lower semi-contin...

Logics of Space with Connectedness Predicates: Complete Axiomatizations

In this paper we present a complete quantifier-free axiomatization of several logics on region-based theory of space based on contact relation and connectedness predicates. We prove completeness theorems for the logics in question with respect to three different semantics: algebraic – with respect to several important classes of contact algebras, topological – based on the contact algebras over...

Topological Semantics and Decidability

It is well-known that the basic modal logic of all topological spaces is S4. However, the structure of basic modal and hybrid logics of classes of spaces satisfying various separation axioms was until present unclear. We prove that modal logics of T0, T1 and T2 topological spaces coincide and are S4. We also examine basic hybrid logics of these classes and prove their decidability; as part of t...
